my love for typography has gone here……

•June 19, 2008 • 1 Comment

i’ve been obsessed with typography for while then i took a typography class and well yeah i was immediately inspired. type can make or break the ad/design or be the “star” of the ad/design. i have always played with what type can do. in that class we explored the history and it was interesting to me…etc. okay well recently i haven’t been doing any graphic design work because one i am not employed nor in class and two because i need to update my portfolio. so i decided i needed a project to work on and spend my spare time creating “Typefaces” . i plan to create an army!. i made the face with the letter b.

here is an example:

Parking lots:Who is responsible?

•June 6, 2008 • 5 Comments

Everyone in this world who drives a vehicle encounters horrible parking lot designs. Who designs these lots? And why are they horrible!? To me it seems like someone who doesn’t drive creates these parking spaces. If i were to create a parking lot design, i would make mock designs with little toy cars to see if it worked correctly. Now when you think of a dreadful parking lot like Hawley Lane in Trumbull it worries me. They are by no means taking advantage of the space allotted. The mere stress of a bad parking lot is that you are constantly thinking ” wow there must be a bunch of accidents here” that is usually a bad sign if you think that. The Stop & Shop near by is awful, i actually hate driving in that lot because i think its horrible.

I wonder if there is a demand for parking lot designers…i googled “parking lot design” and well i didn’t come up with much, just a bunch of random PDFs that meant nothing to me. However, i did come across multiple times on how to calculate how many spaces you need and math formulas to determine how many spaces you needed for the traffic. Which is interesting i suppose but i am no math gal ( its not in my blood). I imagine each state has their own requirements for parking lots. Anywho, the most common design is the boring ol’ rectangle or square ( some sort of standard geometric shape, nothing fancy) with the parking spaces just straight. The spin-off of that is the slanted spaces, which i believe are effective. Where i go to school has slanted spots and i don’t have any problem with it. i think the slanted spots are an effective way to move people in and out of parking areas. The issue that develops with slanted spots are you have to make the rows one way. Which is also better most people get the drift of one ways in a parking lot. I mean there is always that one guy who goes the wrong way…but its pretty rare unless the lot is poorly marked with the huge arrows. Everyone makes mistakes.

There is some thought going into the parking but in some cases not much. In the cases where it doesn’t succeed they fail. maybe i should look into parking lot design…

Photoblog v.2 plus [film discussion]

•May 11, 2008 • 1 Comment

Greetings from FINAL hell.

I am taking the time to discuss some photography because 1. I do not want to study for ArtHistory & 2. I feel like typing.

Film photography, at first is hell but when you get to know it its love. I think its funny how that works out. Throughout my photography class this semester i have witnessed people having the worst luck ever with film. When i say worst, i mean the worst. My poor classmate [Allie] at the beginning of the semester had wasted her time on 5 rolls of film. She thought it was the way she was developing the film or light leaks etc. turns out her camera was broken. I saw her cry and i saw another girl cry. It is possibly the most heartbreaking thing watching someone cry over their blank roll of film. i felt so bad, watching them. On the other hand, myself i did fine i had a few glitches with my camera with the light meter. no biggie. I enjoy developing my own film, the whole process. It can be very rewarding. Today i was explaining to my Aunt and Grandma about everything i have to go through to make a decent print. I explained every detail and i was like wow i really do have to do a lot. Honestly i got so used to doing it i forgot how many things i am doing. The both of them were looking at me like i was speaking a totally different language, it was quite humorous. I enjoy explaining the process i think i explained it well, i should be a teacher but i have zero patience. Plus the whole ” people” thing, i am not cut out for that. Anywho, as i keep describing everything i do i was like wow i put an enormous amount of time into photography this semester. I went several times during open lab hours i spent this past friday at the dark room finishing up things. NON-STOP from 10:30am to 3:30pm i did nothing but print about 6 prints which took multiple times to get a decent print i cut 12 mats for my prints, when i think about it, it is quite crazy. This semester am taking [soon to be took] six classes. Which is a pretty heavy schedule , especially including travel time and such. I am pretty positive i want to keep film photography in my life, i think i will always enjoy it. later on in life when i have lots of money i will make a darkroom in my house. Most definitely! I really do enjoy good ol’ Black & White photos.

here are portraits i did.

Digital,  have not forgotten about you! here are some photos i took last weekend @ St. Marys.

I just recently stumbbled across Jason Schwartzman’s solo project named Coconut Records. Which upon hearing i went to the website and purchased the cd. I am super excited for it to come because i am really digging it and not mention i love Jason Schwartz in all of his acting/drumming. [I didn't realize he was the drummer for Phantom Planet but anyways.. ] The last movie ive seen him in was The Darjeeling Limited which i happened to enjoy. But anyways i encourage you to go to his Myspace and check out, there is a video for the song titled West Coast on the website, i believe. West Coast seems to be the “big hit” on itunes when i checked out the cd. You can get the cd on itunes BUT if you buy it off the website they give you a free gift. Now, i was semi disappointed cause they were giving away one of a kind polariods of Jason with the cd but they ran out. They say you will receive a special gift. When i get my cd ill let you know!

As far as the music goes it is kind of pop/rock/indie.

project runway season 4.

I believe to date this season has been the most challenging and unfair season yet. last night’s ep i wasn’t exactly happy with the outcome. Down to two, Elisa & Sweet P, both designers made mediocre designs. Plus the fact the Hershey’s challenge was indeed a difficult task, especially with a limited amount of time and limited resources. If my memory serves me correct both contestants have been in the bottom two numerous times. I think keeping sweet p was stupid her dress was horrible and not creative in any way. Elisa at least had a idea and creative thought behind her dress. Even though her dress was not fantastic i believe she should have stayed.

Elisa                                                Sweet P

Elisa's design Sweet P's design

Okay so let me explain why i think Elisa should have stayed. [ its funny i didn't really necessarily like her but in this case i think i should defend her] Elis’s design may be an ugly brown dress with ugly silver swimies but Elisa put imagination in her design which is very important in fashion. I agree yes she should have been in the bottom BUT Sweet P’s design is easy and ugly and not flattering on the model. Sweet P had not idea what she was doing, she a completely different dress and didn’t like and started over and came out with this disaster. I actaully liked Sweet P as a contestant but once again she was in the bottom two and i think this time she should have been out. But i also feel that it will be her time to go shortly there are only a couple designers i really don’t care for. Sweet P bombed the men’s wear challenge. These two designer’s styles really can’t be compared but execution is a whole different story. Making the design that was in your head is a tough task. To sum things up I believe Elisa should not have been sent home. It might just be my opinion on the whole thing but i think creativity and making it actually appear is more important than not likely a design and make a poorly made dress.

Also if you don’t watch the show i encourage you to go to bravo.com/projectrunway. and check out “rate the runway” to see all of the designs from this ep and see how great & creative the other designers were.
Plus i was talking with my friend Mindy, which we have discussed before about the limitation on creativity in these shows. i mean i knwo that they have to have some kind of limitation but making your idea in about 6 hours is a lot of work for your hands and mind. The best example of not enough time is The Shot that was on VH1 it was absolutely absurd. They would have like 15 minutes to shoot a model and that is nearly impossible to get the shot you want. That show had potential to be really cool and interesting but it wound up being rushed and corny.anywho…

Thanks to bravo for having a new called “make me a supermodel” [damnn you guys] it hasn’t started yet. but i can’t wait. Anyways I’m routing for Holly [ not just because we share the same name]

contests….

•December 6, 2007 • 2 Comments

Every now and then i get into a fad called “enter every contest/sweepstakes alive” I have been doing this since i was high school and i’ve been ever since. It’s only a couple times a year when magazines have a billion contests. Before i go on…i have only won one item through out my crazy contest faze. it wasn’t even a good prize. it was a stinky(smelled real bad) lip gloss, but i was sooo happy i won it i used it. I think i do this because:
1.i like getting mail and if i ever do win something freakin’ awesome and i get it thru the mail i would be so pumped. i like surprises.
2. when im bored i go on Allure, Marie Clarie, Jane, Seventeen, etc. and enter all the contests. Some are soo lame but i fill it out anyways! you really never know.

I found myself doing this on Monday of this week at school in the computer lab. And i was thinking of allllllll the contests i have ever entered and i only won one thing. How can i be that unlucky? and Do they even award prizes? are they trying to get your info for spam? I personally do not know anyone who has won a (better than lip gloss) contest prize.

i dont understand why people wear their pj’s to class. i have once and i was left feeling skeevy. Do they have something against pants? i mean dont get me wrong yea i know you wanna be comfy, but how long does it take to put real pants? not long at all. This esp bothers me because a. when i lived on campus at wasteconn i had 8am classes i still put real pants on! i just can not do it.
b. to me it proves you are lazy, see i dont wanna look lazy. Also, i love fashion, i wanna be representin’ my style, not my sleepwear.

oh if you are reading this and one of those people, sorry lazy comfy person. It doesn’t sit well with me.

oh and i had the worst Hot Chocolate today. life ruiner.

YES, i chose the area where Urban Outfitters is and Toad’s Place. i believe its very popular. i refer to it as the Broadway District. i might have made that up but honestly at this point not really caring. Yesterday i lost all my work at school in class. so i had to recreate this its basically the same layout i had originally just a little tweaked here and there.
